Combustion engine poppet valves material investigation

Růžička Jan - University of Chemical Technology in Prague (Czech Republic)

The paper covers the wear mechanisms of intake and exhaust valves of a Ford Fiesta VI 2011 four-cylinder water-cooled petrol engine and a Harley-Davidson WLC 1942 air-cooled two-cylinder petrol engine. The first step of research that compares the material characteristics and surface condition of the worn valves with their unused equivalents is presented. The investigation was carried out using conventional metallography and optical microscopy, electron microscopy with EDS analysis, and GDS, XRD, XRF, FTIR and Raman spectrometry.
