In the first part, the presentation gives an overview on the preconditions and differences between Quenching and Tempering (Q&T) and Quenching and Partitioning (Q&P) regarding the metallurgical mechanisms, time-temperature regimes as well as effects of alloying elements and corresponding microstructural constituents. The second part will show examples how different mechanical properties can be adjusted by a variation of heat treatment parameters and which potential advantages and deteriorations need to be taken into consideration.
